Navigating the NPA Crisis: Bankers’ Challenges and Management Strategies in Indian Banking

Author(s) :   Sushil Kumar1, Manju Katarya2

Abstract : The persistent challenge of Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) has significantly impacted the Indian banking sector, particularly public sector banks, over the past two decades (Rajeev & Mahesh, 2010; Ghosh, 2005; SRCC, 2018). This paper investigates the operational, legal, and systemic difficulties faced by Indian bankers in managing NPAs and critically reviews the strategies adopted up to 2018. Drawing on both secondary data and primary qualitative insights from the authors’ own structured questionnaire survey of banking professionals, the study evaluates regulatory interventions, recovery mechanisms, and evolving management practices in the Indian context (Das & Ghosh, 2007; BPAS Journals, 2018). The findings reveal that, while regulatory and policy measures have improved transparency and recovery rates, operational inefficiencies, legal bottlenecks, and sectoral vulnerabilities continue to impede sustainable NPA reduction. The paper concludes by emphasizing the need for sustained reforms in risk management, legal infrastructure, and operational processes, supported by qualitative evidence from practitioners in the field.
