Policy Measures and Strategies for Reducing NPAs in Indian Banks: A Comprehensive Review

Author(s) :   Sushil Kumar

Abstract : Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) have remained a persistent challenge in the Indian banking sector, constraining credit growth, eroding profitability, and threatening financial stability. This paper synthesizes empirical research, regulatory reports, and sectoral case studies up to 2018 to propose a comprehensive set of policy measures and management strategies for sustainable NPA reduction. The analysis covers legal reforms, regulatory frameworks, operational enhancements, and institutional innovations such as the SARFAESI Act, Debt Recovery Tribunals, Asset Reconstruction Companies, and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC). The findings underscore the importance of robust credit appraisal, early warning systems, effective recovery mechanisms, and coordinated policy action to restore asset quality and public trust in the banking system.
