External Factors and Their Relationship with NPAs in Indian Banks: A Macroeconomic and Systemic Analysis

Author(s) :   Sushil Kumar

Abstract : This study examines the influence of external macroeconomic and systemic factors on Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) in Indian banks between 2008 and 2018. Drawing on data from the Reserve Bank of India, Ministry of Finance, and peer-reviewed research, the analysis explores how GDP growth, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, and regulatory changes have shaped NPA trends. The findings reveal that economic slowdowns, inflationary pressures, currency volatility, and delays in policy implementation significantly increase NPAs, especially in vulnerable sectors such as infrastructure and steel. The study highlights the need for proactive macroeconomic management, sector-specific interventions, and regulatory reforms to stabilize asset quality in Indian banking.
