Diversity Management Practices in Higher Education Institutions: An exploratory investigation

Author(s) :   Kanupriya Thakur1, Dr. Aditi Sharma2

Abstract : This research focuses on the diversity practices used in Higher Education Institutes (HEW) of Northern India. The research is descriptive exploratory in nature and employs multi-stage sampling for participant selection to achieve representativeness and diversity. Questionnaires were administered to the teaching staff of the participating universities and returned 400 completed responses, representing an impressive 80 percent response rate. EFA (Exploratory Factor Analysis) was utilized to uncover the multidimensional construct of diversity management practices in higher education institutions. Finding the components of the practices of management brake down to: politics of fairness and non-discrimination, supportive culture, supportive infrastructure, training and cultivating awareness to diversity, and the apportionment of policy. These components capture the whole picture of what is perceived as practiced and managed in an institution of higher learning. The results reveal the necessity of equity in Human Resources policies and practices, inclusive organizational culture, and adequate policies for the support of marginalized groups. The research provides new perspectives aimed at the neglect of diversity strategies in the equity policies of higher education institutions.
